Did you know that high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is a common condition, that usually has no symptoms. If left untreated it can cause many health problems such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes and more. However, it is manageable with the right approach.
There are several things that can increase your chance of having high blood pressure:
- your age – you’re more likely to get high blood pressure as you get older
- having close relative with high blood pressure
- if you have a Black African, Black Caribbean or South Asian ethnic background
- having an unhealthy diet, especially one that’s high in salt
- being overweight
- smoking
- drinking too much alcohol
- feeling stressed over a long period of time
The good news is there are many things you can do to lower your blood pressure and significantly improve your health and wellbeing.

In some cases, lifestyle changes may not be enough to lower blood pressure, and medication may be necessary. It’s important to follow your doctor’s recommendations and take medications as prescribed. If you have concerns about your blood pressure or overall health then speak to your doctor.
